Stress is basically a feeling that is created whenever you react in a certain way to certain events.  It’s your body’s way of rising to meet a challenge and preparing to meet a difficult situation with strength, focus, stamina, and a heightened sense of awareness. 

 

Stress can become trouble for you if you experience too much of it and it starts to affect your day to day existence.  If you are feeling overly stress, then you need to learn some stress management techniques.  There is a lot of advice online about how to deal with stress and how to handle stressful situations.   

 

How does stress affect you physically? 

 

The human body responds to stressors by activating the certain hormones and the nervous system.  The hypothalamus signals the adrenaline glands to generate adrenaline and cortisol and then releases them into the bloodstream.  Obviously, these hormones will speed up your heart and breathing rates, blood pressure, and even metabolism.  You must learn stress reducing techniques in order to stay calm.

The physical effects on your body prepare you to quickly react to handle the pressure of the moment.  This reaction is natural and is called the “stress response”.  When it is working correctly, the body’s stress response will enhance your ability to perform under pressure.  This is another reason why you should learn how to cope with stress. 

 

What can cause over-stress? 

 

Stress can affect everyone in a different way, which is why some people become over-stressed under a particular situation while someone else may not.   

 

There are a number of things that can cause people to feel over-stressed, including: 

 

·         Problems at work or school 

·         Exams  

·         Relationships 

·         Any type of abuse 

·         New responsibilities 

·         Heavy responsibilities 

·         A traumatic event 

·         Chronic illness or disability 

·         Peer pressure and feeling bullied 

·         Unrealistic expectations of oneself placed by friends, family, or co-workers 

·         Having to move to a new place 

 

What happens if you are over-stressed? 

 

If you become over-stressed, it is imperative to your health---both physical and psychological---that you learn about ways to reduce stress.  Some emotional consequences include: 

 

·         Feeling angry, hostile, or irritable, even when you shouldn’t be 

·         Crying 

·         Avoiding others 

·         Feeling highly anxious 

·         Moodiness, crankiness, feeling frustration toward things that ordinarily wouldn’t bother you 

·         Anxiety attacks 

·         Sadness or depression 

·         Feeling lack of confidence 

·         Low self-esteem 

 

And if these aren’t bad enough, you also have many physical consequences to worry about! 

 

Physical: 

 

·         Headaches 

·         Upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea 

·         Backache 

·         Insomnia 

·         Fatigue 

·         Eating too little or too much 

·         Smoking 

·         Increased heart rate 

 

If you are experience these problems (even just one or two), you need to talk to your doctor, parents, school counselor, or health care professional.  While there are some natural stress relief methods, you still need to consult with a professional as well.  At least talk to someone whom you trust so that you can get some of the stress of your chest.  Also, you need to realize that you are not alone.
