Also referred to as “Social Phobia”, a Social Anxiety Disorder is the fear of being judged, criticized, or embarrassed in social situations and when speaking with other people.  If you have social anxiety disorder, then you probably experience physical symptoms as well as being fearful of social interactions.  All of this might lead you to avoid social interaction and situations altogether.  Thankfully, there are ways of overcoming social anxiety altogether!   

 

Is social anxiety just being “shy”? 

 

Some people think that social anxiety and shy are one of the same.  Is this true?  Yes and no.  Everybody feels shy every now and then, although feeling shy shouldn’t stop you doing the things you enjoy.  Social anxiety is an “extreme” type of shyness that often comes alongside physical symptoms of anxiety. 

 

Shyness can become social anxiety whenever you find it difficult to be around other people.  This means that you may find any type of social interaction or situation frightening and awkward.  As a result, you may find yourself isolated from your friends, family, and people altogether.  Thus, you need to work on treating social anxiety.

Physical symptoms include:

·         Trembling 

·         Sweating 

·         Muscle tensing 

·         Muscle twitching 

·         Dry throat 

·         Blushing 

·         Dizziness 

·         An overwhelming need to escape 

·         Nausea or feeling as if you’re punched in the stomach 

·         Blushing 

 

These symptoms can really cause you to become physically ill, which is why you should really get social anxiety treatment.   

 

What you might think, feel, or do. 

 

·         You might feel self-conscious, as if you have failed---even when you do not. 

·         You might feel the need to avoid a feared social situation, which can lead to isolation from friends and even family. 

·         You might be more prone to abuse drugs or alcohol in order to make yourself feel less inhibited.   

 

Once again, it’s important that you learn all you can about treating social anxiety.  

 

When are you most likely to fear this type of fear? 

 

People with a Social Anxiety Disorder might experience significant emotional distress during any of the following instances: 

 

·         Being the center of attention 

·         Speaking in a group---even a small one. 

·         Using the telephone 

·         Being observed while doing something 

·         Having to work in groups,  either at work or in school 

·         Having to find a seat on a crowded bus  

·         Being in a crowd 

·         Meeting and speaking with people in authority 

·         Eating in public
