Generalized Anxiety Disorders - What Are They?

Generalized Anxiety Disorders A Generalized Anxiety Disorder, aka GAD, is essentially an uncontrollable and unrealistic fear about everyday situations and events, such as work and school. The worrying and fear have to occur almost daily for six months in order for the condition to be diagnosed as GAD.

The worrying is uncontrollable and can be accompanied by additional symptoms that can include getting tired easily, restlessness, difficulty finding and maintaining focus toward anything, feeling cranky, muscle tensing, and insomnia.  At least three of these need to accompany Generalized Anxiety Disorders for diagnosis purposes.

This can affect parts of your life, and you may find that you are unable to enjoy the things in life you ordinarily would.  It is possible that you might feel the need to misuse drugs or alcohol as a way to escape the overwhelming or numb feelings.

What are some of the symptoms of anxiety?

GAD can affect both mental and physical health. Symptoms depend on varying factors. Some may pass quickly while others may stay for a longer period of time. If you or a friend has some of these symptoms, you should consider talking to a doctor or counselor about treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. Don’t try living with it, as it will ultimately get worse and cause even more problems.
