Anxiety and Panic Disorder Treatment - 5 Steps to the Road to Recovery

Anxiety and Panic Disorder Treatment The recovery process for panic and anxiety.

There are five main aspects of the recovery process, for when one wants to overcome panic attacks:

·         The diagnosis itself

·         The acceptance

·         The treatment(s)

·         The setbacks

·         Resolving the contributing factors

The Diagnosis

It’s never a good thing to try and self-diagnose.  Indeed, the symptoms are so negative and distressing that many attempt to discover answers on their own, whether by browsing online, reading books, or speaking to others.  However, the very first step toward recovery is knowing exactly that you are dealing with.  You need to visit your doctor to ensure that the symptoms of anxiety attacks aren’t mimicking some other illness.

Acceptance

You need to accept that you may have a panic or anxiety disorder.  For some people, this is hard.  There are many pre-conceived ideas about the type of individuals who develop this kind of disorder.  Many people don’t like to associate themselves with words like “panic” and “anxiety”, as they think it makes them weak.  This can lead to trips to the emergency room since the physical consequences will start to occur.  Sometimes it can even take years before an individual finally comes to accept the diagnosis.

Treatment

Anxiety and panic disorder treatment usually requires professional assistance and medication.  Anxiety disorders usually don’t go away on their own.  Symptoms may sometimes subside for awhile, but they almost always come back.  Treatment should include two things:  therapy that addresses the underlying causes and assistance for day-to-day management of the symptoms.   Depending on the individual sufferer, medication may also be needed.

Setbacks

Once an individual begins a treatment program and starts to understand anxiety and how to manage it, he or she can go through a sort of “honeymoon” period, which is when they see a marked improvement in the symptoms.  They feel hopeful once again in returning to normalcy.  They start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Unfortunately, a setback can occur to make things devastating once again.

In order to know how to stop panic attack once and for all, an individual needs to realize that setbacks will happen from time to time and they’re nothing to get worked up about.  They are not signs of failure, they are something from which the individual needs to learn.  Sometimes people can cause setbacks by trying to push themselves too hard or too much.  The best way to deal with setbacks is to look into the factors that may have started them.

Resolving the contributing factors

Part of recovery includes addressing all the underlying issues that caused the disorder in the first place.  While a major stress in life may have been a trigger, it only exposed the underlying factors, such as our desire to be in control or perfectionism.  Additionally, we need to always confront feelings of guilt, shame, and grief related directly to the symptoms of a panic attack and the disorder itself.

So, while people think recovery is only about the treatment of the symptoms, the more you learn about anxiety, the more aware you’ll become of its layers.  Most individuals will attempt to work out their issues all by themselves, although that’s not a good idea.  Getting professional help and support can give sufferers the perspective and depth of understanding that would be difficult to learn on their own.
